Johnson Chesnut Whittaker: History Presentation

Join us for this history presentation on the life of Johnson Chesnut Whittaker.
Peter Boykin, a history teacher in Detroit, recounts the amazing story of his great-great grandfather, one of the first African Americans to matriculate at West Point, where he was expelled after a wrongful accusation.
Whittaker was born into slavery in 1858 and was the subject of a book and TV movie titled, Assault at West Point. Whittaker would later become a teacher and a principal, which inspired Boykin to become an educator himself over a century later. To hear the whole story from Boykin himself, join us at the library on Monday, Febraury 6 at 6:30 pm.
